In 2016, Halifax Chiropractor, Dr. Chuck Dauphinee identified a need for a safe, comfortable place for members of the LGBTQ+ community and any allies to learn and play hockey. Having seen similar hockey groups in other cities and discussing his idea with members of the community, Chuck decided to put out a feeler on social media for interest in a “learn to play” hockey group for members of the LGBTQ+ community and any allies who support those values..
After getting an overwhelming response from both members of the LGBTQ+ community and our allies, the Halifax Mussels was born. With the motto “Come out of your shell!”, a snappy hockey stick bearing mascot for a logo and some support from the local hockey community, the first Halifax Mussels drills session was held in early 2017.
The group is now organized by Scott Sears and Kevin Shultz with an advisory group made up of representatives from the LGBTQ+ communities, and holds officiated games year-round at two facilities in Halifax: the Centennial Arena and the Halifax Forum / Civic Arena. Chuck represents the Mussel at the Hockey Nova Scotia level and continues to serve as a advisor and champion for the Mussels values.
One of the key things that makes Mussels different from other hockey groups is our low-barriers access. We believe that anyone, regardless of socio-economic status, gender, orientation, race or skill level should have a chance to try hockey. If you are considering joining us and have not played hockey before or are uncertain if the Mussels is right for you, you are encouraged to contact the Mussels if you would like to try us out - we would be happy to help arrange loaner equipment and partner you with an experienced Mussel to come out and try a drills session or ice time.
