While Halifax Mussels is literally “Fun and Games”, we do have some basic rules and policies that we all must follow to ensure an enjoyable experience for everyone.
These rules are a framework, and the organizing committee reserves the right to modify or change the rules at their discretion. Participants may contact any member of the organizing group or a team captain, in confidence, if they have concerns about another players conduct - on or off the ice.

- We have a zero-tolerance policy for discrimination, harassment or aggressive behviour related to (but not limited to) transphobia, homophobia, racism, non-cisgender, cisgender or skill level. These activities have no place with Halifax Mussels. Harassment may include libelous or derogatory content on social media platforms, exchanges amongst other members of the Mussels group, and comments or statements that bring harm to the public image of Halifax Mussels, our participants and sponsors. In the event of an immediate concern, participants should notify a captain or organizer. Concerns and feedback that are not related to an immediate concern for safety should be directed, in confidence to organizers and/or team captains.
- Reminder to be mindful of PRONOUNS :
For trans, non-binary, or other non-cisgender people, using the correct pronouns validates and affirms they are a person equally deserving of respect and dignity. When people use the right pronouns, they can feel safe and enjoy the moment. When people do not use the right pronouns, that safety is undermined and they are forced to repeat to the world: "I exist".
Unsure of someone's pronouns? You can always play it safe and refer to people by their names or use “they” until you can ask them(or check their helmet). - We are a beginner - intermediate group. There is no slapshots, aggressive contact of any kind, high-sticks or “showboating” allowed. Organizers reserve the right to remove a player who does not respect the spirit or intention of this rule.
- All players are required to carry insurance through our approved insurer. When you register for Halifax Mussels, you will be given the option to sign up for insurance. Our 2020-21 insurance provider is Canlan Ice Sports. Insurance premiums are reasonable (between $25 and $30 per year) and are paid on an annual basis.
- If ice time is cancelled due to weather or other circumstances beyond our control, the ice time may be rescheduled to the end of the season, or a credit issues for future registration.
- Even though you are registered as a regular player, you must confirm attendance prior to each game via our Bench Boss email system. You will be contacted 3-4 days prior to ice time to verify whether you will be attending. If your attendance status changes, please use this email to select “I Can’t Make It” as soon as possible. Closer to ice time, if all regular spots are not filled, we will open the ice time up for approved spare players. Approved Spare Players pay a per-game fee and are not eligible for the perks of regular membership (such as guaranteed spots, prizes / awards, swag, complementary social events etc.). - Have Fun! We are a non-competitive group who keeps score. We want players to experience hockey - skills development, game experience, confidence and exercise. We celebrate effort and achievement in whatever form that takes for each player - their first pass or goal, a great play, a positive attitude.
